If you bill clients by the hour, a good time tracker isn't optional. And for most freelancers, the choice has always come down to Toggl Track vs Clockify.
Until May 20, 2026, Clockify was the obvious winner on price — it offered unlimited tracking, unlimited users, and unlimited projects at $0. That era just ended.
Last month Clockify quietly moved billable rates, CSV exports, and reports beyond 31 days behind a paid plan. The "truly free" tier is gone. And most comparison articles online haven't updated to reflect this.
I tested both tools side by side after the change. Here's what shifts:
Toggl Track's free tier is now better for solo freelancers who need basic tracking + CSV reports
Clockify Basic at $3.99/month still beats Toggl Starter at $9/month if you need billable rates
Clockify Standard at $5.49/month adds built-in invoicing — useful if you want one less tool

If you're using Clockify's free tier and need a report longer than 31 days: export your data weekly as you go, then combine the spreadsheets manually. Not elegant, but it gets around the new restriction without paying.
(Or just switch to Toggl free, which still allows unlimited date ranges.)
